Don't write run-on sentences under your job titles. Don't write general, task-oriented phrases that don't give a sense of what you achieved in the role. Don't include a line stating what role you're applying for. "All it needs to focus on is your impact," he says about your resume. It lends itself to quantifying your impact by saying, "I helped double impressions on the website," for example.

Jobseekers interested in breaking into the film and television industry may have a harder time this year and even in the coming years. The summit covered the media's job landscape at large and how educators can create pathways for young people in it. It's part of Reel Works, an organization that offers an assortment of educational and training programs in the field for underserved youth. U.S. film studios will see a 14% year-over-year decline in content investment in 2024 as a result of the 2023 strikes and the changing film market post pandemic, according to analytics company Ampere Analysis. Ampere also found that the number of scripted TV releases in the US fell from 633 in 2022 and 2021 to 481 in 2023.

When you're writing yours, you'll want to make sure it meets their criteria and doesn't give them a reason to pass on your candidacy. A 'word salad' of keywordsCareer experts recommend using keywords from the job description to prove you meet the role's criteria. When you're looking for a new job, it may seem like a no-brainer to let as many people as possible know. But career experts differ on their opinions about LinkedIn's "open to work" banner, the green sign that shows up just under your photo if you choose to activate it. "It is the biggest red flag" in a job candidate, says Nolan Church, former Google recruiter and current CEO of salary data company FairComp. With that banner activated, "because you need something from me, that means that I have the power in this conversation," she says. But not all career experts agree, and LinkedIn's own data does not necessarily support this thinking.

The biggest red flag hiring managers look for in job candidates is an AI-generated resume, according to new research from Resume Genius, which surveyed 625 hiring managers across the U.S. Other resume faux pas include poor formatting and typos. Remote jobs are getting harder to come by. As of December 2023, remote jobs made up less than 10% of postings advertised on LinkedIn, down from a high of 20.6% in March 2022 — even though close to half of jobseekers prefer remote roles. To examine where remote hiring is happening the most for high-paying jobs, FlexJobs identified the top 10 occupations with the highest number of remote job openings on their site between January and March 2024 that pay more than $100,000. The top industries offering ample remote work opportunities with six-figure salaries include tech, marketing and project management, per FlexJobs data provided to CNBC Make It. With that in mind, here are some in-demand, high-paying remote jobs that can earn you a salary of $100,000 or more, according to data from FlexJobs and Payscale:1.

There are, of course, a few behaviors you'll want to avoid, such as phrases that could turn your interviewer off. Some are "major red flags," says Nolan Church, former recruiter at Google and CEO of salary data company FairComp. These can be phrases like "I work too hard" or "I'm a perfectionist," says Church. They could think you're either not being honest about who you are as a person or you genuinely think you can't get better as a worker. Instead of these empty phrases, Church recommends giving an example of a mistake you made, what you learned from it and how you improved going forward.

The pay gap is even bigger for AAPI women, Black women, Latinas, caregivers, disabled women, and more. The U.S. government doesn't even collect the right data to establish a pay gap for the nonbinary community. A lot goes into a big, national, average pay gap — individual career choices, variable pay across industries and more. So really, can you afford to not pay women fairly in 2024? This is comparable to 2023 when 56% of women workers reported the same, and 2022 when 54% did.

I've been in recruiting for nearly 10 years and a hiring manager for even longer, working in education, non-profits, and tech. When interviewing with a hiring manager as a candidate, my advice is always to be very discerning about what you share. Challenges in previous jobs or with your job searchIn an interview, the hiring manager is looking for someone who makes them confident they can deliver strong results for the company. Some things I've heard job seekers share before — like challenges in previous workplaces or how tough the market is — can distract the hiring manager from seeing them as the strongest candidate. Was their previous manager really difficult to work with, or are they the difficult one?

Here are three of the biggest resume mistakes she's seen and why you should avoid them. But it wasn't just any photo the candidate decided to use: "They chose their driver's license photo," she says, "which, I don't think anybody looks good in their driver's license photo." One possibility is the coding rounds of the typical tech job interview, where candidates are prompted by interviewers to solve technical problems. So, job candidates can easily use something like ChatGPT to effectively cheat their way to fast solutions, according to a recent experiment conducted by interviewing.io, a popular platform for mock tech interviews and industry recruiting. When coding problems were taken verbatim from LeetCode, job candidates using ChatGPT solved correctly 73% of the time, interviewing.io found. That’s far worse than how tech job candidates fare on their own. Relying on their own abilities, interviewing.io found that job candidates passed coding rounds of interviews 53% of the time.

The job market might look solid on paper — unemployment is low, job openings are high — but the reality for many Americans on the job hunt tells a different story. "I just think the numbers are underselling how hard it is for job seekers right now." Economists and recruiters say lingering expectations from the "great resignation" and businesses' fears about an imminent recession could be to blame for job seekers' malaise. "How people feel about the job market is informed by their recent experiences with the job market," Glassdoor chief economist Daniel Zhao recently told CNBC. So even if 2024 is shaping up to be a relatively healthy labor market by recent comparison, it doesn't feel quite as strong."

Lindsay Mustain has looked at a lot of resumes in her more than a decade in talent acquisition. But there's one mistake she sees jobseekers make over and over again, what she calls giving "Miss America answers," or ones she'd imagine hearing in a pageant. These are simple statements that don't give much insight into what candidates actually accomplished on the job. It's happening from the junior level "all the way up to the C-suite," she says, and it's preventing jobseekers from standing out. Here's what Miss America answers are and how to avoid writing them.

In just five years, remote work has gone from a fringe benefit to a sought-after privilege people are competing for. The demand for remote jobs continues to outstrip supply: As of December 2023, remote jobs made up less than 10% of postings advertised on LinkedIn, down from a high of 20.6% in March 2022 — even though close to half of jobseekers prefer remote roles. Remote jobs won't disappear entirely, even if some become harder to find, Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO Scott Farquhar tells CNBC Make It. The Australian software company adopted a "Team Anywhere" policy in 2020 that allows employees to choose between remote, in-person or hybrid work. Instead, Farquhar says the biggest change we'll see to remote work in 2024 is companies introducing stricter, more permanent guardrails around their remote or hybrid work arrangements.

There is one question, in particular, you should "never" ask an employer, says Bert Bean, CEO of the staffing firm Insight Global: "What's the work-life balance for this role?" With this question, he explains, "You risk sending the wrong message about your career aspirations to a future employer." Asking hiring managers about the company's work-life balance can create an impression that you aren't engaged, reliable or committed to the role. "Your future employer shouldn't dictate to you what your boundaries should be." There are other ways to determine a company's approach to work-life balance outside of the interview.

British advertised salaries fall but job ads pick up: Adzuna
  + stars: | 2023-11-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Job search website Adzuna said annual advertised salaries averaged 36,946 pounds ($46,038.41) last month, down 0.4% from September and taking the decline since April to 1.9%. "Falling advertised salaries may not appear to be good news for jobseekers but it does signal that the menace of inflation is finally in retreat," Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna said. However, online job ads climbed 0.35% to 1.03 million adverts, the biggest month-on-month jump since June, helped by pre-Christmas hiring in sectors such as retail and warehousing. But it is closely watching for signs of inflation pressure in the jobs market. An official measure of vacancies, published earlier this month, showed vacancies hit a two-year low of 957,000 in the three months to October and near record wage growth cooled slightly from in the quarter to September.

At the height of the "great resignation," many new hires could expect to double their salaries or receive generous sign-on bonuses. But landing a new job today doesn't pay off like it did only a year ago. Lower quit rates, increasing labor supply and falling worker demand could all be to blame for slowing wage growth this year, says Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. Some industries have been hit harder than others: For new hires in finance, pay growth has been at a "literal standstill" since July, says Richardson. As Richardson cautions: "That new-hire glow — contentment fueled largely by big pay increases — is fading fast."

Brown | Afp | Getty ImagesThe job market continues to show signs of cooling, but alarm bells aren't ringing just yet, economists said. The unemployment rate rose to 3.9% in October, from 3.8% in September, the BLS said. "There's almost no exception in this report: Every indicator suggests a slowing, slackening labor market," she said. "The days of explosive growth are gone, as the labor market shifts into healthier and more sustainable territory," said Noah Yosif, lead labor economist at UKG, a payroll and shift management company. The rise in the unemployment rate may also just be a sign that the extremely hot labor market is loosening a bit, Bunker added.

Workers with AI skills earn up to 40% more than those without them, new research finds. It comes as companies increasingly aim to hire staff with specialized AI skills. The study, which surveyed 25,000 freelance workers, showed that knowledge of machine learning, open-source AI software, and deep learning salaries were the skills employers valued the most. Speaking at the Google Cloud Next conference in London earlier this month, Unilever chief technology officer Adam Raeburn-Jones said AI skills will be a crucial factor in future hiring decisions. Stephan Pretorius, CTO of advertising agency WPP, said his company was now hiring people with specialist AI skills, and that employers would have to battle to attract young workers with AI expertise.

U.S. weekly jobless claims total 198,000, fewer than expected
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Jeff Cox | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Initial filings for unemployment benefits dipped last week, indicating that the U.S. labor market remains tight and a potential factor in persistent inflation. Weekly jobless claims totaled a seasonally adjusted 198,000 for the period ended Oct. 14, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The labor market has been a critical factor in the Federal Reserve's deliberations over monetary policy. The labor market thus far has shown few effects of the United Auto Workers strike as well as other labor unrest. This week's report covers the survey week the Labor Department uses for its nonfarm payrolls report.
